Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay pressed the government last week on Monmouthshire’s role in the City Deal rollout.
During an Assembly debate, Mr Ramsay hammered home that the landmark deal would shape regional politics across Wales for a quarter of a century.
The City Deal is a plan for the ten local authorities in South East Wales, from Bridgend to Monmouthshire, to work together on major infrastructure projects and create opportunities for significant investment.
The deal is projected to create as many as 25,000 jobs in the region in the next 25 years and increase prosperity levels, including in the South Wales valleys.
During the debate Mr Ramsay paid tribute to one of the architects of the City Deal, Peter Fox OBE, leader Monmouthshire County Council.
Mr Ramsay said, “It is a pleasure to lead a major debate in the Assembly about unlocking the economic potential, not just of Monmouthshire, but of the whole of South East Wales.
“With electrification of the South Wales main line and valleys lines and the halving of the Severn tolls, our region is set to become an even more attractive place to live and work.
“The Cardiff Capital Region City Deal is currently being agreed by the ten local authorities and is expected to build on economic opportunities to create skilled jobs and meet the needs of our economy.
“I pay tribute to my friend and colleague Peter Fox OBE, who has worked so very hard to make this project a reality.”
