The tenth anniversary of Llanfoist Open Gardens falls on Sunday (June 17) and the organisers have tried to reflect the year's other important anniversaries - the Diamond Jubilee, London Olympics and bicentenary of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal - in the way that the event has been structured.

Each of the gardens will make reference, in one form or another, to the Olympics while the Village Hall, which is the main centre for food and drinks, will reflect the Jubilee celebrations.

Additionally, to celebrate 200 years of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, the Boat House will be hosting what is believed to be the largest gathering of steam boats ever seen on the canal, carrying passengers for a small fee between gardens as part of the celebrations.

The Open Gardens has become an established annual event in Llanfoist that not only generates funds for the National Garden Scheme's sponsored national charities and other local organisations, but also generates a great local community spirit by bringing together the various skills and expertise of more than 100 local people.

In recognition of the Llanfoist Open Gardens achieving an unbroken ten years of opening, the NGS has presented Llanfoist Villagers Association, the event organisers, with an engraved trowel, which will be mounted in the Village Hall for posterity.

The varied gardens on display attract visitors from far and wide. This year there are around 14 gardens to visit and St Faith's Church in the village is supporting the event with floral displays. As always the popular plant and book stall will be operating in the centre of the village, and there will be other entertainment at various locations and times throughout the day.

All the gardens can be visited between 10-30am and 5-30pm on Sunday (June 17) with a £5 Rover Ticket (children free) which includes minibus transport around the outlying areas. Llanfoist Village Hall will be the centre for morning tea and coffee, brilliant lunches, and afternoon tea and cakes etc.

In addition there will be refreshments available in some gardens.
