The Llangynidr wildfire is no longer officially a major incident after fire crews made the decision to downgrade the blaze following good progress.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire, near Ebbw Vale, was now considered to be under control after significant progress made by firefighters and partner agencies.

Firefighters remain at the scene and will be supported by specialist resources over the coming days as work continues to extinguish any existing hotspots and prevent re-ignition.

Meanwhile, crews continue to battle fires across South Wales and a number of incidents continue to affect communities across the region.

In Blaenavon, there is another wildfire incident following the height of a blaze above the town less than two weeks ago. Fire crews are currently being supported by a specialist helicopter and additional resources to bring the incident to a close. One crew, which had been called to Llangynidr from Llandovery, in Carmarthenshire, was reportedly sent straight to assist firefighters in Blaenavon straight after their earlier call-out.

The recent events have left firefighters exhausted as they continue to work around the clock, with operators pleading with members of the public to give the fire services the space they need to deal with the incidents.

“Please avoid the incident ground and do not fly personal drones as this may affect our operational activity,” a spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

“We are advising local residents to keep all windows and doors closed due to the smoke.”
