A virus outbreak in Monmouthshire has closed down a farm site and caused several people to be taken ill.
Coleg Gwent’s farm in Usk is currently being investigated by Public Health Wales, Monmouthshire County Council and Torfaen County Borough Council after an outbreak of cryptosporidium was confirmed in seven people, with 16 others suspected of having the bug.
Heather Lewis, consultant in health protection for Public Health Wales, said, “We are continuing to work with Coleg Gwent, who have written to all students who may have been on the farm in March.
“As a precaution, Coleg Gwent have also cancelled a series of open days which were due to take place with invited primary schools this week.
“They have put in place a number of recommended control measures which include limiting college students’ access to animals when they return next week,” said Ms Lewis.
Cryptosporidium is an easily-spreadable parasite found in young farm animals.
Those struck down with the bug can have watery diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting which can last for up to a month. A full recovery is then expected.
A spokesman from Public Health Wales said, “Good hand-washing after coming into contact with farm animals, their bedding or dirty equipment, including clothing, is of the utmost importance in preventing infection with cryptosporidium.
“There is no reason for anyone to avoid visiting petting farms as long as they ensure that anyone who has touched animals, thoroughly washes their hands with hot water and soap immediately afterwards and before eating, as hand sanitisers or alcoholic gels should not be solely relied upon.
“Cryptosporidium may be acquired by four main routes: from other people, from animals and their faeces, from untreated drinking water contaminated by either agricultural or human sewage sources, and from swimming in contaminated water.”
Monmouthshire health boards have been advised of the outbreak and asked to be alert to possible cases of diarrhoea or vomiting in people.
Anyone who is unwell with gastrointestinal symptoms is advised to contact their GP or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47.
