A scheme for local parents and carers of children who are autistic or going through the diagnostic process could get extra support.

The EarlyBird Plus scheme, which is licensed by the National Autistic Society (NAS), will be opening to those looking after children aged between four and ten and is will be completely free to attend.

As part of the scheme, parents and carers can attend sessions with Monmouthshire Council’s Educational Psychology Service and Early Years ALN Advisory Teacher, all of whom have been trained by the NAS EarlyBird Centre.

Monmouthshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Laura Wright, said: “This programme is an invaluable way for parents and carers to gain support and understanding when it comes to autism.”

“I would urge all those parents and carers who are eligible to find out more and come along.”

The programme consists of six sessions and aims to give parents and carers a greater understanding of autism, communication, autistic experiences, wellbeing, social interaction and supporting everyday life. It also provides an opportunity for families to meet other parents in similar situations, share experiences and build supportive networks.

Where possible, a member of school staff is also invited to take part, helping to ensure consistency between home and school.

Currently, there is a mix of virtual and in-person sessions planned for those who think it could be useful to them. In-person sessions will run at County Hall in Usk, every Thursday morning except half-term between October 9 and November 19. Meanwhile, there will also be online sessions on a Tuesday morning except half term between May 11 and June 22 2027.

The programme has been running in the county for a number of years now, and parents have previously described it as an “invaluable” way to help them understand autism and connect with other families who are facing similar experiences.

Schools have also praised the knowledge it offers them to support their learners.
