This weekend, a new initiative will see a council team up with local people to give a street in Brynmawr a complete makeover.

Beaufort Street, which runs through the middle of the town centre, will become a hive of activity bringing local businesses, residents and community groups together to freshen up the heart of Brynmawr after the people living in Blaenau Gwent overwhelmingly decided it was in desperate need of some TLC.

72 per cent of respondents to a poll by the council chose Beaufort Street over others in areas such as Ebbw Vale and Tredegar, and now they will come together under the ‘Towns Together’ initiative to make the area more attractive to visitors.

"Towns Together is a great example of the Blaenau Gwent Deal, demonstrating how communities can come together with the council to improve the area in which they live,” said Blaenau Gwent Councillor, John Morgan.

“We have listened to businesses and residents who tell us they want to see improvements made to their town centre and, whilst the council has a significant role to play in this, it’s clear that real lasting change comes from everyone pulling together, getting the job done, and ultimately having pride about their town and a desire to look after it.”

"With this collective action, we hope to make our town centres into areas where people want to visit and businesses want to invest."

Before Saturday, the council will also carry out jest washing in the area before local people get stuck with activities such as painting, cleaning and planting to breathe some life back into their town centre. For those who would like to help, work starts at 9am sharp! A 2pm finish is in order for a Saturday.

Those interested can also complete a volunteer form to express their interest, whether they spend an hour or the full day helping out.
