One shot Johns take the trophy

By Staff reporter in Bowls

With no league fixture last Saturday, Abergavenny Bowls Club took the opportunity to play a mixed two wood pairs competition.

The action began at 11am with four leagues of three teams playing a ‘round robin’ section. The winners of each section were Steve Mears and Sue Williams, Bill Belli and Mal Evans, Mary Evans and Anthony Moriarty, John Vale and John Whomersley.

The section winners then went on to play the semi-finals where Mal Evans and Bill Belli were successful against Sue Williams and Steve Mears to reach the final. John Vale and John Whomersley overcame the challenge of Mary Evans and Anthony Moriarty to also progress into the final.

The final was a very close affair and after the 12 ends the scores were level so a sudden death extra end was played to decide the game. John Vale and John Whomersley managed to secure the one shot required to win the trophy.

Abergavenny Ladies have played just one game in the past week when they travelled to Pontyfelin to play a rearranged league fixture. Unfortunately they were outplayed and lost on all three rinks to lose the game by quite a large margin.

In the coming week the MBA team play a league fixture at Cwmbran and the ladies have league games at Penyrheol and at Avenue Road against Garndiffaith.
