The scene at the bowling green

Abergavenny played their second game in the Carruthers Shield against Six Bells at Avenue Road. Unfortunately they could win on one rink only and therefore suffered a defeat by 86 shots to 83.

The only successful rink was that of Matthew Vale. The rink took control after the fourth end and never allowed their opponents back into the game, winning by 32 shots to nine.

Each of the other three rinks were defeated after conceding shots in the second half of the game. Rink scores were G Hill 16 – 26, John Vale 20 – 26 and Anthony Moriarty 15 – 25.

On Sunday, May 7, Abergavenny had the honour to host East Monmouthshire Bowls Association for their annual Trophy Game. An Abergavenny team played against an EMBA team made up of players from Caldicot, Chepstow, Gilwern, Crickhowell and Bailey Park, the other members of the Association. In excellent weather a close game was enjoyed by all participants.

The game was followed by the trophy presentation by EMBA President Colin Clifford to all finalists from last years EMBA competitions. These included Abergavenny players Matthew Vale, John Vale, Jack Vale, Gethin Hill, John Marsh and Robert Poynter. All of the players listed were winners of competitions, with Matthew Vale winning the rink as well as being crowned the singles champion.

Last Friday several Abergavenny players represented the East Monmouthshire Bowls Association against Rhymney & Sirhowey Valley Bowls Associaton at the green of Rhymney Gwent.

Three of the six rinks were skipped by Abergavenny players Matthew Vale, Gethin Hill and Anthony Moriarty. Also taking part were John Vale, Jack Vale and John Whomersley. The EMBA won on four of the six rinks to win the game convincingly.

On the following day Abergavenny played their final game in the Carruthers at Bedwelty Park. Unfortunately they lost the game and therefore did not qualify for the knock out stages of the competition.

The Ladies team also played a friendly game at Pontymister Athletic last Thursday. Unfortunately due to the adverse weather conditions, the game had to be abandoned after ten ends.

This weekend Abergavenny begin their MBA league games when they welcome Brynmawr to Avenue Road.
