Abergavenny Bowls Club was recently invited by the Mayor Councillor Chris Woodhouse to a reception at the town hall.
Twenty members of the club attended and were welcomed by Councillor Woodhouse, the Mayoress Mrs Sheila Woodhouse, Mr Alan Breeze, Ms Samantha Dodd and Mrs Maureen Powell.
Councillor Woodhouse began by paying tribute to Neil Roberts, a member of Abergavenny Bowls Club, who passed away last month. He then congratulated the bowls club and presented a town plaque in recognition on their success in playing continuously in Abergavenny since their inception in 1860.
In particular, he took the opportunity to recognise the achievement of two members of the club, Gethin Hill and Matthew Vale, who became the Welsh Open Pairs champions for 2016 when winning the final in Llandrindod Wells last August.
They will take the best wishes of the town with them when they go on to represent Wales in the UK Championships, which will be played at the Belmont Bowls Club, Belfast in June.
Abergavenny Bowls Club will begin their 158th year with their Opening Day game on Saturday, April 22.
Anyone interested in playing the game of bowls will be welcome to come along. Alternatively, if you would like more information, contact Secretary Jackie Evans on 01873 853301 or Chairman John Whomersley on 01873 850924.
